Mathematical aspects of phylogenetic groves

چکیده

The inference of new information on the relatedness of species by phylogenetic trees based on DNA data is one of the main challenges ofmodern biology. But despite all technological advances, DNA sequencing is still a time-consuming and costly process. Therefore, decision criteria would be desirable to decide a priori which data might contribute new information to the supertreewhich is not explicitly displayed by any input tree. A new concept, so-called groves, to identify taxon sets with the potential to construct such informative supertrees was suggested by Ané et al. in 2009. But the important conjecture that maximal groves can easily be identified in a database remained unproved and was published on the Isaac Newton Institute’s list of open phylogenetic problems. In this paper, we show that the conjecture does not generally hold, but also introduce a new concept, namely 2-overlap groves, which overcomes this problem. Mathematics Subject Classification (2010). The role of trees as a natural index in post-disaster reconstruction (Case Study: Palm groves of Bam, Following the 2003 Bam earthquake)

Background & objective: Trees, as an influential element, have an important role in post disaster reconstruction in four aspects; they can be used as "temporary settlement materials", "reviving collective memories", "creating calm” and “motivation for reconstruction". In addition, as "living memorials”, they remind the disaster and indicate the necessity of preparedness and resilience of societ...

Ethnobotanical Importance of Orans - As a Means Of Conserving Biodiversity

Special sites or areas that have one or more attributes which distinguish them as somehow extraordinary, usually in a religious or spiritual sense, are called sacred places. They tend to evoke a feeling of some awesome, mysterious, and transcendent power that merits special reverence and treatment. Sacred groves are stands of trees or patches of forest that local communities conserve primarily ...

Molecular phylogenetic affinities of the simakobu monkey (Simias concolor).

The simakobu (Simias concolor), or pig-tailed snubnosed langur, is one of four endemic primate species on the Mentawai Islands oV the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, and is currently considered a monotypic genus (BrandonJones et al., 2004; Miller, 1903). This species, like many other colobines, is a specialized folivore found in tropical rainforests. The simakobu monkey is a member of the “od...

Bounding the Size of a Network Defined By Visibility Property

Phylogenetic networks are mathematical structures for modeling and visualization of reticulation processes in the study of evolution. Galled networks, reticulation visible networks, nearly-stable networks and stable-child networks are the four classes of phylogenetic networks that are recently introduced to study the topological and algorithmic aspects of phylogenetic networks. We prove the fol...
